So far, the DDPS Alumni Community is comprised of members that have participated in the DDPS courses from 2008 to 2013 but is open to further alumni generations. During this period, the “Development Diplomacy for Peace and Security” (DDPS) training course was a five-week course, organized by KAIPTC and GIZ Bonn/Germany, and designed to build African capacity to meet current and future challenges in conflict prevention, regional security, cooperation and peace building.
Since 2014 onwards, KAIPTC and the GIZ Support Project to KAIPTC are organizing the DDPS course in a three weeks format. Due to the Ebola crisis, the first course of this type could however only be held in spring 2015.
The DDPS courses from 2008 to 2013 were intended for mid-career executives in government and multilateral organizations and executives in civil society and non-governmental organizations (NGO) in Africa, whose job functions influence policy making and programming on development, peace and security especially within the context of the African Union and its regional structures.
The course’s learning objectives were to enhance the participants’ knowledge on global, continental and regional policy frameworks on peace and security, and to develop core skills and competencies of participants to influence peace, security and development discourses toward informed policy formulation and implementation.
The DDPS training combined theory with extensive hands-on practice. Through scenario based simulation exercises, case studies and role plays, participants were encouraged to utilize their experiences in the learning environment. Content and exercises were focused on real-life scenarios, which provided participants an opportunity to engage with actual contemporary challenges confronting the continent and which they were likely to have to engage in their lines of duty.
Apart from strengthening the capacities of the course participants, the goal was to create a lasting network between course alumni, peace and security related training centres, government representatives, regional organisations, and civil society institutions. The DDPS Alumni Community’s activities are one of its results.
